History
Provided by Lynette Stevens, daughter of Robert Anthony Wheeler, 20 November 2018:
"Robert Antony Wheeler, known as Tony was a Construction Engineer from Bournemouth who became interested in Tibet while at school. He collected Tibetan stamps for over 35 years up until his untimely death in 1975 aged 50.
He owned the major collection of Tibetan stamps in the UK and had exhibited in most European and some Asiatic countries which brought him many of these medals including a gold medal in 1973 at The Indian International Philatelic Exhibition ( Indipex ) held in New Delhi. That was the first time that a major award had been given for a collection of Tibet at an International exhibition.
Tony and his wife Pat travelled hundreds of miles each year giving talks and displays to philatelic societies all over the country. Tony was Chairman of the Bournemouth and District Society and Pat was Secretary. He was a member of The Royal Philatelic Society and a member of The Society of Postal Historians.
Tony and Pat were delighted to meet The Dalai Lama in 1973."
