HERBERT CHARLES VASSALL ADAMS (1873 – 1955)

Adams was a giant among collectors. He made fine collections of many countries including Great Britain, Austria, Chile, Greece, Lombardy-Venetia, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Turkey and later New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

His Great Britain was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1950 London Exhibition. With Major Kenneth Beaumont he shared the responsibility of writing the first edition of The Postage Stamps of Great Britain Part III published by The Royal Philatelic Society London in 1954. His outstanding collection of King George V proofs and essays were presented to the Society in 1956.

Adams joined the Society in 1924 and was elected an Honorary Life Fellow in 1952. At various times he was Honorary Librarian and Curator of the Society’s collections and for twelve years prior to his unfortunate death in a car accident was a member of the Expert Committee.

Awarded the Tilleard Medal for Great Britain 1947.

He served as Vice-President of the RPSL and President of the City of London Philatelic Society and was a founder member of the Society of Postal Historians.
