Artist, miniature oil paintings
From Daphne Foskett’s ‘Miniatures, Dictionary and Guide’ (Antique Collectors’ Club, 1994) :
"Tayler, Charles Foot. (fl. 1818-1853)
In 1818 was awarded a silver Isis medal for an original miniature by the Society of Arts. Exhibited at the R.A., 1820-1853. From 1820-1821 he lived in the Isle of Wight; later settled in Bath where he had several diffrent addresses from 182201845 and onwards. He seems to have had a distinguished clientele and painted a number of the theatrical profession. Long refers to a miniature of a little girl holding a doll, signed 'C.F. Tayler 1810' or '1819', and obviously an early work. An attractive miniature of a lady, inscribed on the reverse, 'Painted by Chas. F. Tayler /8 Oxford Row, Bath 1833', was lent to the exhibition in Edinburgh in 1965 by Major R.M.O. de la Hey. He was a good artist who used a pale pink flesh colour shaded with a slightly grreenish tinge; his portraits are often well drawn and expressive. He frequently painted his miniature against stylised landscape backgrounds. The B.M. has two engraved portraits of actresses after his work. A good rectangular miniature of a man signed 'C.F. Tayler /1822', is in the V.&. A. M. Four exceptionally fine miniatures by the above artist were sold at Christie's, 2 April 1968; they represented Sir Henry Franks Frederick Johnson, 3rd Baronet of Bath and other members of the Johnson family."
